Ethical Code

Commitment to Conduct and Service of the Realtor®

The National Association of REALTORS® adopted its first ethical code in 1913, following those of professionals such as doctors, lawyers and engineers.
A REALTOR® is a real estate professional who has chosen to join the National Association of REALTORS® and is governed by its strict Ethical Code.
What does this mean to you? This means that any REALTOR® you work with has voluntarily accepted to abide by the Ethical Code, based on professionalism and protection to the public.
REALTORS® are subject to disciplinary action and sanctions if they fail to comply with the obligations imposed by the Ethical Code.
The Ethical Code is a detailed document that describes the professional responsibilities of any REALTOR®.
Do not hesitate to ask any REALTOR® for a copy of the Code, including the Rules of Practice. The Code guarantees that you will deal with a professional who will always be present and will defend the interests of their client.
The Ethical Code is composed of 17 Articles and the Norms of Action related to them. The basic principles of the Code are summarized below.
Please note that this summary is not a substitute for the Code, but is merely a general summary of the Code's key principles.

Duties towards Clients and Consumers
Article 1
A REALTOR® protects and represents his client's interests, while dealing honestly with the other party.
Article 2
A REALTORS® avoids exaggerating, misleading, and concealing important objective defects in property or transactions.
Article 3
REALTORS® cooperates with other professionals to support his client's interests.
Article 4
When you buy or sell for yourself or your family, REALTORS® makes his position or interests clear.
Article 5
A REALTOR® does not provide professional services when it has interests in the property without first warning all interested parties.
Article 6
A REALTOR® informs you of any fees or financial benefits you may receive for recommending a product or service.
Article 7
A REALTOR® only accepts compensation from one party, except with the authorization of his client and knowledge of all.
Article 8
The REALTOR® maintains the funds it receives from his clients in an independent account.
Article 9
The REALTOR® makes sure that all the details of the agreements are in writing and all receive copies.

Duties towards the public
Article 10
A REALTOR® provides professional service to clients and consumers without regard to race, color, religion, sex, disability, family status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. A REALTOR® does not discriminate in his work practices.
Article 11
A REALTOR® has experience and is competent in the issues he is dealing with, seeks help from the competent professionals in his case, or warns the client when they lack experience in something concrete.
Article 12
REALTORS® are honest and sincere in his communications, and show reality in his advertising and communications.
Article 13
A REALTOR® does not get involved in legal matters for which it does not have the necessary training and qualification.
Article 14
REALTORS® participate voluntarily in the resolution of complaints regarding the ethics of his actions.

Duties towards others REALTORS®
Article 15
A REALTOR® only makes loyal, never false, comments regarding other real estate professionals.
Article 16
A REALTOR® respects the unique agreements that other REALTORS® have with their clients.
Article 17
The REALTOR® seeks to mediate and arbitrate any economic disagreements that may arise with other REALTORS® or their clients.
